Press Statement: Igala Youth Leaders Assembly (IYLA)

Press Statement: Igala Youth Leaders Assembly (IYLA);

October 20, 2024

The Igala Youth Leaders Assembly (IYLA) strongly condemns the shocking electoral malpractices that compromised the legitimacy of Kogi state's local council election. We are outraged by the blatant manipulation of election materials, rigged to favor the All Progressives Congress (APC).

Our Unwavering Demands

1. Immediate Cancellation and Investigation

A thorough probe into this electoral travesty, followed by swift prosecution and punishment of those culpable.

2. Electoral Reforms: The National Assembly must expedite radical reforms, safeguarding democracy and preventing future malfeasance.

3. INEC Independence: INEC's unconditional autonomy in conducting local council elections, free from state interference.

Non-Negotiable Reforms

1. Independent Election Management: INEC must conduct elections without undue influence or coercion.

2. Impartial Swearing-in Process: The chief magistrate, not the governor, should ensure impartiality.

3. Electoral Accountability: Robust mechanisms must hold electoral officials accountable for malpractices.

We condemn the recent "selection" process as a sham and demand its annulment. IYLA urges all stakeholders to join her in demanding an end to electoral impunity and protection of our democracy.

Will the government and electoral authorities heed our call, or will they continue to condone electoral malpractices? Can we truly claim to be a democracy when the people's voices are silenced? Will we defend our democracy or watch as it's undermined?

Signed

Umar Hassan,

Inter Party Relations,

Igala Youth Leaders Assembly (IYLA)

ABENEMI’S CARETAKER COMMITTEE OF KOGI SDP: A FARCE?

ABENEMI’S CARETAKER COMMITTEE OF KOGI SDP: A FARCE? The situation regarding the caretaker committee established by the SDP in Kogi state is beginning to shift, as the presiding judge has decided to return the case to the Chief Judge (CJ) for reassignment to a substantive judge once the judicial vacation ends. This decision is significant because, upon reassignment, the new judge will set a fresh date for the hearing, which, according to reports, may be sometime in October or November. Until then, all parties must maintain the status quo, meaning, Hon. Moses Peter will continue as the chairman, and the caretaker committee's actions will be rendered ineffective, making all their decisions null and void. In terms of the upcoming elections, this implies that: - The Kogi State Independent Electoral Commission (KOSIEC) will be legally bound to recognize Moses Peter as the party chairman and work with him on all electoral matters. - Candidates not presented to KOSIEC through the office ...
